Getting Started
- Check the requirements for your funding opportunity.
Requirements and plan formats vary from funder to funder, year to year, and by funding opportunity. Check your specific funding call for plan requirements and links to data policies. - Consult a template and/or example plans.
Even if you have applied for a similar grant before, plan formats change. Some funders now require specific forms instead of narrative plans. Check the funding opportunity for links to guidance, resources, and the required plan format. - Consider your data management needs.
If you’re not sure where to start, try our Data Management Planning Workbook, which provides simple questions to help you anticipate your data management and sharing needs. For data management suggestions and best practices, check out our Self-Guided Data Management Workshop. - Be realistic.
Funders expect you to stick to your plan, so be realistic about what is feasible with your time and resources. Remember to check your preferred repository for space limitations and deposit fees. Any necessary costs will need to be included in your grant budget.
Choosing a Repository
Plans typically ask you to name the repository or repositories where you intend to share your data. Check your funding opportunity to see if your funder requires or recommends specific repositories for research on your topic. If not, a domain repository that you already know and trust for finding data in your field is usually the best option for maximizing your research impact.
If there is no relevant domain repository for your data, the Illinois Data Bank is a great, no-cost option for open-access data sharing and provides DOIs, curation, and long-term preservation. The Illinois Data Bank is CoreTrustSeal certified and meets data sharing requirements for federally funded research.
If you’re not sure where to share your data, please reach out to us. We’re happy to help you find the repository that’s right for you.
