Dryad Repository

Notice about Dryad Membership

Dryad has recently launched a new business model to ensure their sustainability into the future. Due to a significant increase in Dryad’s institutional membership fee, the University will not be able to renew its subscription after January 1, 2026. However, researchers can continue to use Dryad by paying the Data Publishing Charge (DPC) – typically $150 per dataset, plus additional fees for each GB.

For a free, locally supported alternative, consider using the Illinois Data Bank, which offers DOI, generous size allowance (up to 2 TB), and expert curation. Contact us and we’re happy to help you explore this option or answer any questions. We otherwise encourage researchers to continue to use Dryad as it fits their needs and their resources allow.

What different between the Illinois Data Bank and Dryad?

The Illinois Data Bank and Dryad are complementary resources.

  • Dryad is especially useful when it’s integrated into a journal’s publishing platform (see here for a list of journals). There is a limit in size and all data in Dryad must be released under Creative Commons Zero (CC0) waiver.
  • The Illinois Data Bank has more flexibility with licensing (e.g. allows non CC0 licenses,), is better suited for large data deposits, is integrated with Illinois Experts so datasets appear in researcher profiles automatically, and our curators are on site to work with you as much or as little as you need at any time during your research project.
